St. Fiacre

by Hilary Horn

A prayer by Alicia Dykstra —

Tomorrow (or September 1st for some)  we celebrate St Fiacre who had a monastery in Ireland at Cill Fiachra (Kilferagh), Co Kilkenny, and later in France. He is the patron saint of gardeners and taxidrivers. He is also often invoked for healing of cancers and venereal diseases.
You took after the father
Working miracles in a garden
Growing herbs and flowers
Healing the cancers of this world
Seeking solitude digging soil
You heard divine revelations
And your soul was filled
A plenitude of blooms
Enough to serve others
Who came to you for help
The wisdom that comes
From being close to the earth
Getting dirt under your nails
Watching a garden up close
Throughout every season
