Song Lines

by Hilary Horn
On Wednesdays I pick my goddaughter up from school and we go on together to her brothers day care centre, we sometimes walk quickly and can have 10 minutes waiting on her Mum to collect her for piano lessons… ten minutes. Using just what is around us every week she can create these extraordinary landscapes giving shape to her imagination and play. I wrote this poem watching her outline countries, giving each a natural attraction to visit, storying the songlines as she drew them and I marvel at her… she is creative, she is exploring, she is articulate.

Whole worlds becoming
At the tips of her fingers
Weaving sticks and stories
Into a landscape of happening
For who, what, why…?
She delights in her creation
And Creation delights in her
