Lent – a poem from Ana Lisa de Jong

Giving God,
what do I give up,
this Lent?

For you

who remind me that
everything you have
given us is lent.

Fashioned

only for what,
it was meant.
A reason, a season or a day.

Everything is yours to give,
and take a way.

Giving God,
what do I release to you
this Lent?

My questions,

my answers, and
the prayers uttered
until I am spent.

Wondering

why do you not
give us what we want?
Instead you will

that we should give
to you our all.

That empty,
we might count our benefits.
