Last week I put together a list of my favourite books on Sabbath and then asked my friends on Facebook what they would recommend. Here is the final list we came up with:
Baab, Lynne: Sabbath Keeping: Finding Freedom In the Rhythms of Rest
Berry, Wendell: This Day: Collected and New Sabbath Poems
Brueggemann, Walter: The Sabbath As Resistance: Saying No To The Culture of Now
Buchanan, Mark: The Rest of God: Restoring Your Soul By Restoring Sabbath
Dawn, Marva: Keeping the Sabbath Wholly: Ceasing, Resting, Embracing, Feasting
Heschel, Abraham: The Sabbath
Lieberman, Joe: The Gift of Rest: Rediscovering the Beauty of the Sabbath
Mueller, Wayne: Sabbath: Finding Rest, Renewal and Delight in Our Busy Lives
Winner, Lauren: Mudhouse Sabbath: An Invitation to a Life of Spiritual Discipline
Wirzba, Norman: Living the Sabbath: Discovering the Rhythms of Rest and Delight
What else would you recommend?

For Sabbath’s Sake: Embracing Your Need for Rest, Worship, and Community
This is coming in October. I liked her book Saffron Cross.
Thanks Kathleen. I will need to keep my eyes open for it.
for me, it wasn’t a book – it was a blog post which pulled me up short and gave a new perspective.
for now, not reading about but actually doing Sabbath – in the broadest sense of taking regular time out.
also taking time first thing every day to simply be – to acknowledge what is within and what is rising up from my depths, to trust that God is in all of this, however painful – that is sabbath, and that can colour the whole of the day to come.
And I’m not at all sure I’m actually a Christian any more… but I know that i connect with a Reality greater than I, and that Reality calls me into a place of peace and rest in the midst of busy-ness.
Oh, and putting the phone on silent at times, also severely restricting checking Facebook and Twitter, seriously helps… ;)i
