What Do You Want From The New Year?

by Christine Sine

I was just reading John Smulo’s blog post Making the Most of Time with its 3 great questions

  1. What are your thoughts on the new year?
  2. What are you looking forward to?
  3. What would you like to be different about this year?

and I realized that I have not really shared my own thoughts on the new year and in fact I realize that I have not made any resolutions or thought a great deal about what I am looking forward to.

Probably more than anything I am looking forward to spending time in listening to God and to the people through whom God speaks into my life.  These last couple of years have been a real stretching, learning and growing time as I have continued to learn to be more sensitive to the voice of God.  At the same time I have had to learn to slow down and take time to listen – not something that is easy in the busy world in which we live.  And with all the noise around us it is even harder to listen to the still small voices through which God often speaks.  Not surprisingly people spend millions of dollars a year to buy peace and quiet and rarely seem to attain their goals.

So this year I want to make sure that I take time and make space to listen to God on a regular basis.  I try to take some time each Sunday but I find that I easily abandon this when life gets busy.  Hopefully this year I will do better.

One of the reasons I love writing liturgies is because it makes me pause and reflect on God.  So I plan to continue writing more of these in the new year too.  I also want to listen more sensitively to people I talk to – not rushing in to say my bit but constantly reminding myself that each person I speak to reflects something of the image of God and therefore in being more attentive to others I am also being more attentive to God.

I’m with you on the listening to God part. I mentioned briefly in my New Year’s post that my prayer for the new year was to be led by God so we can lead others. Listening is certainly part of that. It’s great to see Christians thinking on the same page. Thank you.
