This morning’s psalm was Psalm 31, one of my favourites. Thirty years ago when I lived in New Zealand I had a leather Bible cover made that I still use for my bible. It has the words “I trust in you, Lord; I say your are my God. My times are in your hands. ” (Ps 31: 14 – 15). I was reflecting this morning on how true those words have been. Life has not always been easy but it has been very good and I have constantly been aware of God’s presence, God’s guidance and the ongoing journey of healing that God continues to work in my life. God has truly “set my feet in a spacious place.” (v8) and I am extremely grateful. This picture by Hanna Cheriyan Varghese seemed to express my sentiments exactly.
I just wanted to share that gratitude with you this morning as I am also aware of how easily I fail to thank God for the many blessings of my life. It is easier for me to focus on what I still want to see happen rather than on what God has accomplished. I am discovering that gratitude is a very hard discipline to learn. It helps if I take time each week to reflect on the question “What am I most grateful for this week?” but even remembering to ask myself that is a challenge. What have you discovered that helps remind you of the bounty of God and our constant need to be grateful for God’s many blessings?
